Can an unregistered builder do domestic building work on a job valued over $5,000?
Apart from some exceptional circumstances, no builder can carry out work valued at more than $5,000 unless they are registered with the Building practitioners Board (BPB) in the appropriate category. For Domestic work, the appropriate category is usually Domestic Builder Unlimited (DBU).
So for example, if an owner contracts for an electrical wiring job worth $2,000, and a few weeks later, a painting job worth $4,000, the jobs are treated as parts of a single project, the total value of which is more than $5,000. therefore, the requirements of a major domestic building contract will apply to both jobs.
